MENLO PARK, CALIFORNIA (BNO NEWS) -- Social networking giant Facebook on Thursday launched a photo-sharing application for users in English-speaking countries, more than a month after the company bought the popular photo-sharing app Instagram.
'Facebook Camera' will first be available for Apple's iPhone and is expected to help users access and upload photos faster and easier. The application allows users to shoot, filter, and share single or sets of photos. It also allows users to scroll through a feed of photos uploaded to Facebook by friends.
"When you launch the app, you'll see a feed of just great photos from the people you care about. You can swipe to see more of any album or tap to enlarge an individual photo," said Facebook product manager and designer Dirk Stoop.
Stoop said the mobile app will allow users to share multiple photos at once, instead of having to post them one at a time. "Just select the shots you want to share by tapping the check-mark on each photo and then hit post," he said. "You'll have a chance to add a caption, say where you were and tag friends before you share."
The application also has a photo editing feature with filters, cropping and rotation tools. "It's also easy to edit photos with new tools like the ability to crop, rotate and add filters to any picture in your camera roll," Stoop said, adding that the application is now available in the App Store in English-speaking countries.
The announcement and release of the photo-sharing application comes slightly over a month after Facebook acquired popular photo-sharing app Instagram for roughly $1 billion, a combination of cash and shares of Facebook. However, 'Facebook Camera' was developed by Facebook without the help of Instagram as the acquisition deal hasn't closed yet.
With approximately 901 million active users, more than half of them using mobile devices, Facebook is the world's largest social networking service.
