SAMANGAN, AFGHANISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- A bus carrying dozens of newly graduated Afghan soldiers overturned in the northern region of the country on Monday morning, killing nine of them and injuring nearly two dozen others, provincial officials said on Tuesday.
The accident occurred at around 8 a.m. local time in the Hazrati Sultan District, located in Samangan province, when the vehicle went off the road and overturned. Police said it happened after the driver of the bus lost control, possibly due to reckless driving, although no other details were immediately available.
Provincial officials confirmed nine Afghan soldiers were killed while 20 others were injured and taken to local hospitals in the region.
The soldiers on the bus had recently graduated from a three months training course and were on their way to the Afghan capital Kabul. The group was scheduled to be deployed in Afghan army units in Paktika province later this month.
