"Breaking News:" #Twitterfail

From the BNO Newsroom.

LOS ANGELES (BNO NEWS) -- Millions of Twitter users from around the world were locked out of Twitter after a denial-of-service attack (DDOS) on its service. And after the recent media frenzy around the social networking website, the media certainly noticed: breaking news. Several other social networking websites, including Facebook, also experienced problems but it was not immediately clear if those were related to Twitter.

AFP News wire

The AFP news wire, about two hours into the attack, sent a breaking news alert to its subscribers around the world.

Sky News TV

The British news channel Sky News was quick to pick up the wire alert from AFP and interrupted its programming for breaking news coverage of the outage.

Sky News online

Fox News

Fox News followed only minutes after Sky News to "break" the story, although this screenshot was taken when the site came back online. Fox News on its website reported it as an "URGENT" story.

CNN USA

CNN USA followed soon after Sky News and Fox News to report the Twitter outage as a story "just in". It then continued its coverage as a normal story on air, with regular updates.

CNN online

CNN International on its website showed the Twitter outage as a "developing story", normally reserved for major news stories. Unfortunately, CNN's breaking news account was not able to break the story.

Local media

Most local media outlets in the United States did not report the story as "breaking news", except WTNH-TV as seen in the screenshots.

BNO News

Last but not least, BNO News also covered the outage. Updates were posted to FriendFeed and to our newly released iPhone push application (click here to download). A breaking news e-mail alert was also sent to our users.
