WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) -- "Dirty Dancing" actor Patrick Swayze, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in January 2008, died on Monday, his publicist confirmed. He was 57.

Swayze will be remembered by a generation for his role of dance instructor Johnny Castle in the 1987 hit "Dirty Dancing." He was also nominated for a Golden Globe for his role in the movie.

Besides his role in "Dirty Dancing," he was also a singer-songwriter. Among other roles, he acted Orry Main in the "North and South" television miniseries and portrayed Sam Wheat in the movie "Ghost."

Swayze was listed by "People magazine" as the "Sexiest Man Alive" in 1991. He is survived by his wife Lisa Niemi.
